If the round table was our Plan II class world lit. and the people around the table were us, then that would make for a very interesting perspective. In a way, King Arthur represents Red Hawk, who is a figure-head of the class. The green-knight is any temptation that arises during our time at UT. This could be anywhere from friends, parties, netflix, or any other distractions. The green knight is someone who gets us off our game. Right when things are going well, something comes to get us off track. Gawain's
failure represent's our failures as students in Plan II. In life, we all will make mistakes and do things that were not proud of and that is just apart of our journey. "By God's self,'quoth Gawain,/ 'I will neither weep nor groan; to God's will I bend again/ and I am sworn as His own." (223) This quote from Gawain and the Green Knight relates to our everyday lives. It is saying that in life we will have hardships and bad things will happen, but God is always with us. This is very important to remember when we go through various struggles and road bumps during the semester.
"Yes, we are in the torture chamber that we call uncertainty. And yes, we're taking a huge emotional risk when we allow ourselves to be vulnerable." (108)
Is there a such thing as being too vulnerable? Sometimes when we allow ourselves to be open and honest with people, it can come back and bite us in the butt. Unfortunately, the people who are kind and sincere are the ones who get run over or left behind, but I believe there is nothing wrong with being vulnerable. When you are vulnerable you are allowing yourself to be open to new possibilities and opportunities that you wouldn't have if you keep your guard up. Although being vulnerable does have its downsides like uncertainty for example, the good outweighs the bad. "I define vulnerability as
uncertainty, risk, and emotional exposure."(109) When you allow yourself to be exposed there might be hard times, but most the time there are benefits. Even if the situation doesn't turn out how you hoped there are things you could learn about yourself and know for future situations. "It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; . . . who at best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly."(Theodore Roosevelt) Sometimes our biggest enemy is ourselves holding us back from greatness.
